DOCTORS at the Osma-nia General Hospital have achieved a rare feat by doing five organ transplants simulta-neously in a single patient in a 36-hour surgery, reckoned as the first of its kind in the country.
According to the hospital authori-ties, for the first time in the coun-try, five organs were successfully trans-planted into a single patient in one procedure (multi-vis-ceral transplant). The organs transplanted simultaneously included the stomach, duode-
num, pancreas, small bowel, and large intestine (right colon).
The doctors said that this highly complex surgery continued uninterrupted for 36 hours. The rare surgery was successfully performed on a 30-year-old engineer
from Sircilla. Osmania Gen-eral Hospital Head of Surgical Gastroenterology Dr CH Madhusudhan said that the engineer had a rare genetic disease 'Femilil adenomatous polyposis coli' resulting in cancer in his large intestine.
