The Supreme Court on Friday introduced a set of administrative measures, including mandatory virtual hearings twice a week and partial work-from-home for registry staff, in line with efforts to conserve fuel amid the West Asia crisis. The court decided that cases will be heard exclusively through video conferencing on Mondays and Fridays. Judges also “unanimously resolved” to encourage car-pooling among themselves to optimise fuel use. The measures follow a call by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reduce avoidable expenditure on fuel and gold imports in view of the ongoing conflict in West Asia. “Matters listed on miscellaneous days (i.e. on Mondays, Fridays, or such other days as declared to be miscellaneous), and matters listed during the Court's partial working days, shall be heard by video-conferencing only. “The Registry shall ensure that links for the video-conferencing are sent in a timely manner, stable video-conferencing facilities are maintained and timely technical assistance facilities are extended so as to avoid any inconvenience to the Hon'ble Court,” a circular said.
